The challenge
As one of the world’s largest retailers, this client operates an extensive store network underpinned by a highly complex back-office infrastructure. While reliable connectivity to individual stores is essential, the business identified an even more critical priority: a resilient, high-performance core data centre network capable of supporting all central back-office processing at scale. With demand continuing to grow, their existing network capacity was fast running out.
The client needed a partner who could design and deliver a meshed backhaul network connecting multiple UK data centres, extend that connectivity internationally, and provide ongoing managed support, with the flexibility to scale capacity further as their needs evolved, all while meeting the rigorous standards expected of an organisation of this scale and complexity.
The solution
Having never previously worked with our organisation, the client invited us to compete for this opportunity from a standing start. Over many months, we took part in a comprehensive evaluation process where we went head-to-head with several major global connectivity providers.
Through close collaboration with the client’s team, we developed a solution tailored to their evolving requirements: a 100GB meshed backhaul network spanning key UK data centres, extending via long-haul connectivity to major European hubs, supported by an MPLS network reaching across the UK, USA, and India. This delivered ten times their previous capacity, providing not only for today’s needs but for the future too. The entire solution is backed by managed connectivity services, giving the client full visibility and control over their critical infrastructure.
Looking ahead, the client now has a clear plan in place to quadruple their capacity further, giving them the confidence that their network can scale in step with the business as it grows. Because we own the underlying network infrastructure, the client isn’t limited by a third party’s roadmap – they have the flexibility to call on additional capacity from Zayo Europe, the cables owners, whenever their needs demand it.
The design process involved multiple iterations to ensure the solution precisely matched the client’s operational needs, followed by a detailed commercial negotiation to finalise an agreement built around their specific requirements.
