Zayo Europe has strengthened its network presence in Italy with a new 400GE-enabled IP Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Rome, located at the Nautilus Mediterranean Exchange (NAMEX), the city’s largest internet exchange.
This new PoP complements Zayo Europe’s existing presence in Milan and reflects its continued investment in high‑growth European markets. As a new Tier‑1 member of NAMEX, Zayo Europe is directly connecting Rome’s rapidly expanding internet ecosystem into its high‑capacity, low‑latency global Tier‑1 IP network, unlocking new options for customers seeking proximity, performance and resilience.
Designed to meet accelerating demand from cloud, content and enterprise customers, Rome is enabled with 400GE ports and advanced DDoS protection from day one, offering scalable, robust IP connectivity engineered for intensive and fast‑expanding workloads. The expansion further enhances diversity and performance across Italy, reducing reliance on congested Mediterranean corridors and strengthening connectivity to Southern Europe, North Africa and beyond.
Colman Deegan, CEO of Zayo Europe, commented: “Rome is emerging as a strategically important hub for Mediterranean connectivity, driven by rising internet traffic, increased data centre investment, and new subsea cable systems. As demand continues to grow, existing routes are becoming increasingly congested, and in greater need of scale and diversity.
“Zayo Europe’s expansion into Rome, together with NAMEX, adds much-needed capacity and more direct paths for regional traffic, easing pressure on heavily utilised routes such as Marseille while enhancing southern route diversity from Milan. This significantly strengthens network resilience across Italy and supports the continued growth of cloud, AI, and internet traffic, marking another step in Zayo Europe’s commitment to building a truly interconnected region.”
Maurizio Goretti, CEO of NAMEX, added: “Zayo Europe’s expansion into Rome represents a further step in the city’s development as a Mediterranean interconnection hub.
In recent years, new subsea cable systems have strengthened Italy’s role in international connectivity. Bringing a global Tier-1 IP network to NAMEX complements that physical infrastructure with high-capacity IP interconnection, adding scale, diversity and resilience.
For our members, this means more direct access to global markets and to more than 600 on-net data centres across Europe, with latency and performance aligned with international standards. It reinforces Rome’s role as a location where traffic is exchanged locally rather than backhauled elsewhere, supporting the continued growth of cloud, AI and digital services across Italy and the wider Mediterranean region.”
